executive summary:

Once, people worked on the land and provided for their needs and created a surplus sufficient to sell, getting money for the few other items they needed.
This was the US, until it was designed to end starting in the 1880s, in order to boost profits for the few large corporations by bringing people's savings into the money-based market economy.
This speech highlights three parts of that effort: expanding the markets, redefining the roles of family members, and the concept of socially engineered rising living standards.

speech text:

As a preface, the following comes from a 120-page book (Actions Have Consequences) I finished writing about decluttering our lives. It's not about the environment and going green ...

But everything does comes from nature. We just don't always remember this fact of facts.

Once upon a time in a far off land, people worked on the land and provided for their needs: air, water, food, clothing, and housing were there. They created a surplus sufficient to sell, getting money for the few other items they needed, such as the cloth to make clothing. For the most part, they didn't need a lot of money.

And they supported each other in communities. In fact, without community support, they might not survive. That far off land once upon a time existed here in the US, until it was designed to end starting in the 1880s, with momentum gaining in the 1920s.

It was at that time that a concerted national effort began to bring more people and their savings into the money-based market economy in order to boost profits for the few large corporations that produced and sold and controlled nearly everything.

I'll share three parts of this profit-boosting effort: expanding the markets, redefining the roles of family members, and the concept of socially engineered rising living standards.

The first part of this effort had to do with expanding the markets, the money flowing into them, and the profits that flowed out of them to the few monopoly-like producers and sellers.

The strategy was simple: turn needs into wants, and get more people to want more and more and more. This forces them to enter into the money economy to earn money to get what they want, which through advertising is exactly what the producers tell them what to want. Whereas before, they were fairly self-sufficient in meeting their needs of water, food, housing, and clothing.

The list of products and services we now buy today has escalated far beyond what's needed for us to meet our needs.

Added later to this effort to boost profits was making products that didn't last. By making sure they broke. Or became useless faster, especially by withholding existing technology from current products. Or went out of fashion faster.

The second part of this effort had to do with destroying the control and independence of the family as a self-sustaining economic unit. The roles of family members were deliberately changed.

Previously, the man had dominion over the family, sometimes ruthlessly. He now was forced into the marketplace where business owners had ruthless dominion over him and therefore the family. In short, he was emasculated.

The woman was previously an economic power overseeing the home front. Now she had to go through the dilemma of being the family purchasing manager but denied the full expression of her workplace participation OR her traditional "make at home rather than buy" role. She became dependent on the man's job to do her job.

What about cute little Sammy and Susie? The role-change strategy focused on the child and created the importance of youth, and one of the results was it forced the woman to buy creams and lotions and beauty aids in an effort to remain youthful.

The youth market disempowered the elderly, who previously were invaluable for their wisdom. Now, unless they had money to spend, and often did not, they became useless and worthless. And so we find today they're shut away in care homes or living alone with no community to turn to.

The third part of this effort had to do with social engineering and the concept of rising standards of living. The purpose of this was to keep people wanting more, which meant they had to keep going back to earn money to buy more. And of course, the more money spent, the bigger the marketplace, and the more profits for the few producers and sellers.

They engineered this social change simply, and it continues today: The rich and famous were paraded before the mass of people and their possessions and lifestyles were used to set the standards of socially acceptable living. Where once we grew food on our land, now we had to emulate the rich by having manicured lawns. Where once we dried clothes on backyard clothes lines using the sun and air, now we had to have clothes dryers running on fossil fuels because of neighborhood restrictions.

It became a never-ending arms race of more, more, and more to ensure more and more profits.

There's much, much more I'd love to share but we don't have the time.

We do have the time for me to tell you that underlying all the manipulation is this: the purpose:

To take away the control and independence people have over their own lives, and make them dependent on money-based marketplace solutions for everything. Water, food, housing, clothing, even services provided by the government. Government, the one thing we all own in common.

Underlying our lives, our marketplace, our government ... is nature. Everything comes from nature.

In my book, I show with hard numbers we already have more than enough to provide for all our needs. All 310 million of us. It's just misallocated, based on our individual decisions which collectively support the continued misallocation of resources and ensure we'll end up losing what little control or independence we have left. I believe that's called ... slavery.

We as individuals must decide differently. Or as a society, we'll end up enslaving ourselves. Or as a species on a worsened planet, we will perish collectively.

We capitalists must not forget.
